So, what is HTML and how do I get started.?

HTML is an acronym for HyperText Markup Language, it is used to format a web pages with text, images, and links. HTML uses standardized tags , elements, and attributes which the web browser (IE, Netscape Navigator) will interpret and translate into a viewable web document.

  • To get started with html all we will need is a plain text editor like Notepad. Notepad plain text editor will be used throughout as the editor.
  • Open a plain text notepad editor by selecting the following, when in a Windows environment: START->All Programs -> Accessories Menu ->NotePad. (SEE DEMO: How to open notepad).

Once the file is open, select a folder where the file is to be saved. From the file menu select the save option to save the file to a folder on your hard drive. . Enter a file name in the file name field (e.g.: index.html) then click the OK button.

This will save a plain text file with an html extension. This html extension identifies the file as an HTML file. Locate the file and double click on it to display the web page in the default internet browser.
